How Much Sleep Do I Need To Stay Healthy?

December 4th, 2009

Many people do not know how much sleep do I need as sleep is a key factor for your health. Sleep is necessary for your body to function properly and maintain your health. You can severely damage your body and your brain by not getting enough sleep. No matter how busy your life is you should make an effort to get plenty of sleep.

You need sleep in order for the brain to be able to get back to its natural state. If humans were designed for the brain to be constantly on then we would not need sleep. During sleep your brain is able to regenerate and continue to function as it should. You need to think of your brain like a battery and all batteries need to be recharged.

The amount of sleep that each person needs is not the same though studies have found that most individuals need more than seven hours of sleep each night. Your health will play a large factor into how much sleep you need.

A lack of sleep will reduce your memory as well as lower your attention span. So it pays to make sure that you sleep well. All of the research that has been conducted on this was done on healthy adults.

Scientists have mapped brain activity and those that get plenty of sleep and are rested show a lot of activity in the temporal lobe. Individuals that are tired do not show this activity and it is known that the temporal lobe processes language. So when you are rested you have an easier time learning new tasks and remembering things.

Not getting enough sleep can also affect other parts of the body in adverse ways as sleep deprivation will raise your blood pressure and affect your nervous system. You also are not as alert and this can lead to more accidents which can result in injury and even death. Sleep is very important and you should sleep until you fell rested.
